New U-haul facility proposed
Design Review Board to consider permit
At its next virtual meeting Thursday, the Ukiah Design Review Board will review plans to build a large, three-story storage and truck rental facility in the vacant lot next to Kohl’s on North Orchard Avenue.
According to the staff report prepared for the July 22 meeting, an application for a Major Development permit was submitted by Savelle Jefferson to build a nearly 40-foot tall “three-story self-storage (±102,791 sf), showroom (±2,945 sf), delivery/receiving area (±1,460 sf), and (Uhaul) truck and trailer storage and rental, related retail sales, and automotive accessory sales.”
Staff describes the project as including: 846 self-storage units, of various sizes; 504 U-box storage containers, 21 customer parking spaces; lateral and diagonal parking spaces for truck/trailer parking and display; loading bay for U-box loading/unloading onto delivery trucks, 2,454 square-foot showroom for auto accessory retail sales and truck/trailer rental office.
Staff notes that current zoning for the parcel would allow such a business to operate, and requests that the Design Review Board “review the project for design and make a recommendation to the Ukiah Planning Commission.”
