Clearlake drops to #5 rate bass fishery

- Don, 4Reel Fshin’

Good Thursday my fellow anglers ..

If you were not already aware, Clear Lake was rated the #1 bass fishery in the United States. BUT, like most good things, they have come to an end.. The July/august issue of Bassmaster has once again revealed the top 100 bass fishing lakes in America. This time around, Clear Lake did not rank as high. Clear Lake is now rated the #5 rated bass fishery. Still, that is great but, once you have been the top dog it is a disappointment when you get knocked down some.

I kinda did some snooping around and found out one of the reasons our lake over the mountain took a drop in rating. Well, for 2021 there were not as many anglers that were as high on Clear Lake as they were last year. One tournament angler told me that he felt that some of the locals do not like tournament anglers. They think the lake only belongs to them and that all the outsiders should just stay away and not bring Covid to their community.

If what he said is true, that is sad. So, I ask this question to those who are opposed to bass tournaments…. What do you have going for you in your county other than the lake ? If there were no more bass tournaments on Clear Lake

how would the decrease in tax revenue affect your counties services? *Remember, anglers come from all over the West to fish Clear Lake . When they do, they bring their wallets with them !

Ok , I have said my piece…

BLUE LAKES >> Boy the past two weeks, the Upper Blue Lakes has been packed with folks camping and enjoying the water. The fishing has been slow as of late, not really sure why. I guess everyone is sleeping in… Usually when the water temperature gets into the mid-70’s the trout will stay in the deeper water during the day. Although, if you get out on the water during the early morning hours, you could see small schools of trout feeding on the surface.

The bass fishing has also been the best before sunrise. Try pitchin’ a Senko, Roboworm or Brush hog along the docks as well as the brush up against the shore. I guess Fish and Game has forgotten about Blue Lakes. Still no fish plants scheduled for the near future.

MENDOCINO COAST >> The fishing off of our coast has been a mixed bag. One day the salmon fishing is good, the next day it is slowed. Bottom fishing for rock fish and Lingcod has picked up the slack though. Also when the ocean lays down and the water is flat, the word is that Pacific Halibut have been biting. There have been a few reports of Halibut

being caught in the 20 to 30 pound range. With the warmer weather we have had, the water temperature has moved up to about 52 — 54 degrees. This really has the bait fish active which in-turn has the bite going. Really, if you can adjust what you’re fishin’ for after you get out and read the water . You could bring in a limit of salmon, halibut or rock fish. Better yet, limits of each..

Here’s a funny one from my “dear sweet aunty B’s.”
