1,000 Hours Outside

-

Ginny Yurich, founder of 1,000 Hours Outside, said “It is a global movement designed for any age child (or adult) and any environment.

“The entire purpose of 1,000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1,200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthier outcome!

“In the sea of activities available to children and families the simple act of stepping outside to play can easily get lost. Who has time for playing in the yard when there are dances to be rehearsed, homework to be finished, music notes to be played, and soccer drills to run?”

Celebrating Carre

The Mendocino Women’s Political Coalition recently honored retired county 1st District Supervisor Carre Brown at a fete at Grace Hudson Museum. Carre is the fifth generation to live, work and raise a family in Mendocino County. She’s lived on her husband’s family ranch in Potter Valley the past 45 years.

In both her professional and personal life, she has worked on behalf of children, farmers, women, public health, the elderly, and quality public education within the county. She has also been a leading advocate in the county’s water, natural resources and environmental issues. For 22 years of her professional career she was the executive administrator for the county Farm Bureau. She spent over a decade in the banking industry and managed to rear three small children as a stay-at-home-mom.

Elected in 2008, she began serving as Supervisor in 2009, elected two more terms, for a total of 12 years, through one disaster after another.

All 12 years she was the county representative to the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) serving on the Board of Directors, receiving the prestigious 2020 Circle of Service Award for her work and service.

All I can say is, “What a woman!” Oh, that more of our young women would step out and serve. Thank you, Miz Carre, for your lifetime of work on our behalf.

“A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor such is my idea of happiness.”

— Leo Tolstoy
