Giants sign first-round pick Bednar, 9 of first 10 MLB selections

- By Evan Webeck

Like any other first-round pick, Will Bednar arrived alongside his family for his introduction to Giants fans and the city of San Francisco. Less common: brother David was already here — in the visiting clubhouse.

The Giants’ top selection in this month’s MLB draft — 14th overall — fitted his new cream home jersey over a dress shirt in the third-base dugout shortly after inking a deal worth a reported $3.65 million. By his side was his older brother, David, a former 35th-round selection in his third major-league season, currently handling eighth-inning duties for the Pirates, who were in town to begin a three-game weekend series.

“Right after I got drafted, I looked at the schedule and saw the first home game’s against the Pirates,” Will said. “It’s really cool how the stars aligned and everything worked out the way it did.”

Manager Gabe Kapler said he was meeting with the Giants pitching coaches when Bednar walked in.

“First impressions were great,” Kapler said. “Let’s put it like this: the cool quotes that I’ve seen from scouts ... and some of the clips that I’ve seen from the College World Series says it all.”

With Bednar signed, the Giants have secured nine of their first 10 draft selections under contract. His deal, the terms of which were first reported by Mlb.com, would amount to about $400,000 below slot value for the pick.

For Bednar, a native of the Pittsburgh area, the introductory trip also served as his first visit to San Francisco.

The first sight to see on his list? Alcatraz.

“It’s definitely cool to be here,” Bednar said. “I went up in the upper deck and got a great view of everything.”

In a way, the story comes full circle for the Bednar baseball clan with Will’s arrival in San Francisco; David made his major-league debut at Oracle Park in 2019. Will said he also rocked a Richmond Flying Squirrels hat “for the longest time” after David played a college tournament in the ballpark of San Francisco’s minorleague affiliate.

Bednar, who went 9-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 92 1/3 innings this season, said he’ll report back to the Giants facilities in Arizona, where he’ll continue conditioning work.
