Lake Mendocino is wonderful right now

-

I have received several pretty good salmon fishing reports. It looks like the ocean has calmed down some with the conditions being graded at a “light chop.” The really good news is the tuna should be coming in soon. With water temperatures running near 60 degrees close by, the tuna will be in and are within most boaters’ reach. So, the added bonus is, with Labor Day behind us, there should be less boats salmon fishing. = Better odds of hooking into a trophy salmon. Salmon, it’s what’s for dinner. Yum!

BLUE LAKES >> The bass fishing on the upper Blue Lake has continued to be good. Some anglers have been doing well throwing top water lures like a Popr or a Bill Dance Spittin’ Image. The best bite is during the early morning hours and the last hour of daylight. Some trout are still being caught trolling or slow draggin’ a night crawler or powerbait along the bottom.

CLEAR LAKE >> The water quality of the #5 rated bass fishing lake continues to be pretty mucky. But the good news is that once the evenings start cooling down the algae muck monster will go away. The Clearlake Oaks end of the lake still smells like a sewer, but it is the only area still in really bad shape.

The bass are schooled up in wolf packs right now, typical for this time of the year. Keep moving to all your favorite spots. Hopefully, you will find a school. Most of the bass were caught on the south end in fifteen to twenty feet of water. Also, during the early morning hours, some bass are being caught off of a frog, chugging it along the top of weed mats and near the tules. The key to late summer fishin’ Clearlake is to be on the water early, early. Probably the best fishing is at first light ‘til about 8:30 a.m.

Be careful! There are many hazards just below the water surface.

LAKE MENDOCINO >> Our backyard lake is wonderful right now. I know that sounds weird but there are really no anglers on the water right now. With the boat ramps being closed, you got to get creative to get your boat on the water. The effort will be well worth your time!

The early morning hours continue to be the best time to fish. Top water fishing before 8 a.m. is a good bet. Small Mouth Bass have recently become attracted to anything with a chartreuse color on it. Keep moving and cover a lot of water until you find the fish. The bass have started their fall feeding frenzy. Several of the bass Teresa and I have caught have had full bellies. Go get on the water; right now is some of the best fishing this season.

LAKE SONOMA >> Reports are coming out of Lake Sonoma stating that the bass fishing is much improved. Still, the north end of the lake is producing most of the bass. Yorty Creek, Cherry Creek, and the deeper water of Skunk Creek have all been very popular areas. Successful anglers have been doing best with a reaction bite. Fast retrieving a KDV Square-build crank bait through and around submersed trees.

Keep it movin’, make long casts and cover a lot of water. Also I have received good reports of some anglers hooking into land locked salmon being caught trolling along the dam during the morning hours.

Thanks for reading and remember to keep it reel! Don = 4REEL Fishin’
