Third-graders who ingested edibles are OK
The third-graders admitted to the hospital after they ingested cannabis edibles at school were released and are in good health.
On Thursday, Three Jacoby Creek School students were taken to receive medical attention after they began to display signs of intoxication in class from ingesting the edibles, which a classmate had in their possession. The student shared the edibles with four other students during their snack recess unaware of the cannabis contents.
Now that the scare has passed, Jacoby Creek superintendent and principal Melanie Nannizzi confirmed the students in question are safe and sound.
“All of the students are doing well,” she told to the Times-standard via phone Friday afternoon.
In an email sent out the day of the incident, Nannizzi informed parents of the events. At first, the classroom was evacuated and the fire department was contacted out of concerns of carbon monoxide exposure. After determining the children displaying symptoms had consumed the edibles, their parents were contacted. The remaining students returned to class.
“This was a frightening incident for our entire school community,” the letter from Nannizzi states.
The Arcata Police Department is currently investigating the event after the superintendent contacted the agency. Arcata officer Heidi Groszmann said to the Times-standard.
“We were assuming (the edibles) came from somebody's house,” the officer said.
The investigation is ongoing and Groszmann encourages community members to come forward with any relevant information.
The officer also said parents and other adults consuming the cannabis products should be aware of where they store such products.
“It's a friendly reminder to please store them in a safe location away from children because, obviously, they come in candy form,” she said.
