The Union Democrat

Divided we fall

-

To the Editor:

These are anxious times. The upcoming elections seem like both a speeding train and a slow moving disaster. Every day brings a new fear. Fear that the president won't accept the result of our elections, that there will be rioting in the streets, and our democracy will be lost through the corruption and incompetence pervading our government. Fear that the lies, hatred, and partisan politics spreading like a cancer through the internet are being used to justify tearing the body of our communities and government apart. Fear that the country that I've known and loved is no longer that country. The country founded on the rule of law; separation of powers; one person, one vote; equality, liberty and justice for all; that has been an example for young democracies throughout the world; is crumbling. It has been overrun by greed and political expediency by the powerful dividing us into camps of them and us. They have turned us into “others,” not Americans, not neighbors, not even fellow human beings.

But, this is what we the people need to remember. That we're not good and evil tribes. That we share a common humanity. That we're all just trying to make our lives a little better; make our country a little better. That the way we have always triumphed is by working together, strengthened by our diversity, not separated and at war because of it.

The vast majority of Americans are people of good intent. The people in power who are dividing us to retain their power are the problem. This election, let's reject selfserving politicians preaching division and hatred, and elect public servants with a positive vision for the future. This election, please use your vote to help us reclaim our heritage and become a UNITED States of America again.
