The Union Democrat

Cult of personality

-

To the Editor:

It should be evident by rational thinking people who know something about history and leaders of the past, that Donald Trump has created a following that closely follows the description of a cult.

Hitler was charismatic. Trump is, too. Hitler passed himself off as a savior of the people, saving them from party politics and showing his followers a vision forward in the future. Trump promised to “drain the swamp” in Washington, to “Make America Great Again.”

Post-election, the voters have spoken and he was defeated regardless of what he still claims and in defiance of court decisions.

Hitler played on the country's grievances and helped bring about that country's downfall from a democratic republic. He became an autocratic ruler, leading the population with his zeal and ambition to that country's terrible ruin.

Whether it is blind ambition, fear of Trump's power and influence, or both, 18 state Republican attorneys general and 126 Republican members of the House chose to do what should be considered unthinkable by asking the Supreme Court to invalidate legal votes in four states in favor of President Trump. Only the lower courts and finally the Supreme Court stood for the rule of law and the Constitution and narrowly saved democracy from autocratic submission to a president who only cares that he gets what he wants regardless of the consequences.

This country has never faced such disregard for the law, for election officials, from elected representatives. Treasonous.

Election security was such that it was described as the most secure election we've had. If Russia, China, Iran, or other countries wished we would war with one another and our election process would be suspect, they got their wish without having to meddle other than encourage Trump's cult to believe lies and sow doubt.
