David John Herbertson passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2021, in Sonora, California, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born in Ross on Jan. 5, 1936, to David Winston and Josephine Herbertson. He joined the Marines at age 17 and served in the Korean War as a drill sergeant. He has a bachelor’s degree from Chico State.

David retired as a CHP sergeant in 1991 after assignments in Mount Shasta, Bakersfield and Ukiah. After retirement, he and his wife Ginger settled in Sonora.

David enjoyed storytelling, the 49ers, military history, and was a private pilot. He was passionate about dogs, his family, and Pismo Beach. He was a member of the Elks Club and Mountain Cops of Tuolumne County and worked as a night manager for Sonora Hills Adult Community.

Tennie Elizabeth Barnes

June 11, 1946 — Jan. 21, 2021

Tennie Barnes was born in Pasadena, California, to Wayne Franklin Barnes and Eileen Margaret Rosenberg Barnes. She passed away at 74 on Jan. 21, 2021, at the UC Davis Medical Center.

After earning her BA in physical education from CSU Long Beach in 1968, Tennie spent three years in Germany as a civilian providing recreational services for the U.S. Army. She returned to California and earned her masters degree at CSU Pomona, after which she taught at Claremont Colleges.

Tennie moved to Sonora in the 1970s after helping friends build a house here.

She was active and hard working and decided she wanted to be able to spend more time working outdoors. She became one of the first women carpenter apprentices in California. She worked on a major housing subdivision in 1982, then got her general contractor’s license. As part of the Hollywood Propmakers Union, she built sets for many Hollywood films and TV productions, including locally filmed shows like “Back the Future III.” In 1999, she and Anne purchased a “honeywagon” (restroom/changing rooms that were necessary for location shoots). She drove for movies and TV shows as a member of the Hollywood Teamsters Union. They worked on “The Princess Diaries” and always valued the time they spent with Julie Andrews, who was fascinated that two women were running such an operation.

Tennie’s CSU Long Beach volleyball coach remembered her as one of those individuals who appeared to be happy all the time — she loved life and loved being active. She put her whole body and bounteous enthusiasm into whatever she was doing.

Tennie was always there to help a friend in need. She was an avid pinochle player who hosted weekly games. A life-long dog lover/owner, she could often be found at the Humane Society walking dogs. She frequently took it upon herself to help dogs find their forever homes. Once you met Tennie, you never forgot her — she was a formidable “presence” and is sorely missed by her many friends and family.

Tennie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Karen Joanne Barnes Marquis. She is survived by her wife, Anne Valentine, and her sister, Jane Lynn Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Tennie with a contribution to Friends of the Animal Community (FOAC), PO Box 4627, Sonora, CA 95370.
