Why we should follow COVID-19 protocols

- Emily Mckeon Sonora Elementary School Seventh Grade

Due to recent events, I wanted to express some of my concerns with COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.

Sonorans are under the illusion that because vaccines are available, they no longer have to take this seriously. This is simply not true. Because of this community not doing what they were told, I have decided that doing distance learning is the safest option for my family in these times.

Throughout being in quarantine due to the coronavirus, there are a lot of things that Sonorans are being selfish or blind to. For example, if they have left the house recently without a mask. Here's why they should think twice about doing that. They can help things go back to normal, and they need to realize how deadly this virus actually is.

How can things go back to normal faster by wearing a mask? If this community keeps spreading the virus, the more time we have to wait until things will go back to normal. I wouldn't even be writing this if we all just took a moment to realize what we needed to do to save lives. There's literally no reason why we can't save other people who can't fight off the virus that well. If this community would listen to the protocols, then everything will go back to normal. If we all listened, then things can start opening up again and we can all go to restaurants, travel, see our families and save a lot of people.

As a personal experience, quarantine has been really rough. I barely leave my house anymore, and I miss the way things were. My dad, who works out of the county, was exposed to coronavirus in December and had to quarantine through his birthday. If he had tested positive, he would have had to be stuck in a room on Christmas and couldn't even see his family that he lived with. How would you feel in that situation, If you took the necessary precautions and still got exposed because no one is listening? I'm sick of waiting. I don't understand why we are just okay with people suffering over losses of loved ones, not being able to see their families and letting people go through bad times like this. After seeing from a personal experience, I hope that we can change our minds about the next time we want to leave the house without a mask.

Everyone in this community can say that it's not as deadly (to themself), so this won't affect them. They can also say that there would be nothing I could say that will change your “liberties” or your “freedom.” But If everyone in our community actually thought about the reasons, you would know that a lot of people are in danger because we are just okay with spreading the virus. There is no reason to not stay inside, for the sake of humanity.

Take my grandma, for an example. She is a caretaker for the sick and old. A few patients got coronavirus and have died from this because of preexisting conditions, so not only is she in contact with people that have the virus, she also has to go through the loss of losing patients. For no good reason. Please do this for a good cause, so I can see my family again.

Therefore, after reading this, this community should know that they should stay inside to keep the most vulnerable to the virus safe. Just like my family who has suffered the pain of not seeing their family and losing people to the virus. Remember that you can help things go back to normal, and if you realize how deadly this virus actually is, it can make a difference. I hope everyone now realizes the risks of going out, and that you make the correct decision to stay inside or to wear a mask.
