Summerville, Sonora and Bret Harte runners end MLL sports drought
Runners with the Summerville, Sonora and Bret Harte cross country teams faced off last Wednesday at Frogtown in Angels Camp for one of the first Mother Lode League high school sports competitions since March 2020.
“It was a great sight to see athletes competing again,” Frank Garcia, the Sonora High School cross country and track and field head coach, said this week.
Garcia shared photos from two events, a three-mile run for varsity athletes and a two-mile run for ninth- and 10th-grade athletes.
Aiden Dibble, running for the Sonora Wildcats, won the boys’ varsity event in a time of 16 minutes, 20 seconds. Cruz Vasquez, running for the Summerville Bears, placed second in 17 minutes even. Winter Whittle, of Bret Harte High School, took third in 18 minutes, 3 seconds.
Sophia Vasquez, of Summerville High School, won the girls’ varsity event with a time of 19 minutes, 59 seconds. Brie Personius, of Sonora High School, finished second in 20 minutes, 51 seconds.
Alex Mejia Medrano, running for the Bret Harte Bullfrogs, won the boys’ freshman-sophomore event in a time of 13 minutes, 45 seconds. Alton Hendricks, of Summerville High, took second place in 14 minute, 8 seconds. Aidan Cannon, of Sonora High, finished third in 15 minutes, 15 seconds.
Taylee Mcdaniel, of Bret Harte High, won the girls’ freshman-sophomore event in a time of 15 minutes, 9 seconds. Addison Heermance, of Bret Harte High, was a close second in 15 minutes, 10 seconds. Kristen Henderson, of Summerville High, took third in 18 minutes, 25 seconds.
