Lonnie Brakefield

1925 — 2021

Lonnie Brakefield, of Sonora, passed away peacefully on June 22 at the age of 96. He lost his wife, Dorothy, in 2009 after 62 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter, Pat Kirkpatric­k, and her husband, Steve Barnette; his daughter, Bobbie Brakefield and Dickie; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; and two great-great-grandsons.

Lonnie was born and raised in Wayne, Oklahoma. He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II, including an assignment to Iwo Jima. As with many families after the war, Lonnie and Dorothy were victims of the fallout from the Dust Bowl. They traveled west with their family in pursuit of better opportunit­ies. He started out working in agricultur­e in his earlier years in California. Later he became a builder, which became his passion. For 30 of their retired years their favorite activities were traveling with friends in their motorhomes, square dancing along the way.
