COVID-19 claims 74th victim in Tuolumne County,
Tuolumne County reported a 74th death from COVID-19 on Wednesday, as well as 25 new cases.
The deceased individual was identified as a man in his 60s who was recently hospitalized. He was not vaccinated against COVID-19, Michelle Jachetta, county public health director, said Wednesday. No other information about the man’s death was disclosed.
Two of the 25 new cases in the county Wednesday were inmates at the Sierra Conservation Center state prison outside Jamestown.
The county’s 23 new community cases on Wednesday were identified as a girl and a boy under age 12; two girls and three boys between 12 and 17; a woman and two men in their 20s; a woman and a man in their 30s; three women and one man in their 40s; three women and one man in their 50s; two men in their 60s; and a woman in her 80s.
Two of the 23 new community cases were fully vaccinated people, the department said.
A total of 64 fully vaccinated people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the county to date, representing about 0.2% of the county’s fully vaccinated population.
Unvaccinated people have accounted for 90% of the county’s 640 cases since May 24, when the department began reporting the vaccination status of each new case. They have also accounted for a similar percentage of hospitalizations over the same period.
No one in the county who’s fully vaccinated has died from COVID-19 up to this point.
Federal data showed 43.8% of the county’s total population was fully vaccinated as of Wednesday, when the goal is to reach at least 70% for immunity.
There were 229 active coronavirus cases in the county on Wednesday, with 17 individuals hospitalized.
The county’s average daily case rate per 100,000 people over the previous two weeks was 47.8, down from 49.7 on Tuesday. The rate over the same period for vaccinated individuals was 13.6 and for unvaccinated was 71.8.
Calaveras County added 27 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, but it does not disclose gender, age, or vaccination status of new cases.
