Mad About Science camp returns,
After taking a hiatus last summer due to the pandemic, the long-awaited Mad About Science summer camp took place the week of Aug. 2-6 on the Columbia College campus.
There were 120 fourth- and fifth-grade students from Tuolumne County who attended this year’s summer camp.
The students participated in various hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities intended to get them excited about science and engineering and help them recognize the importance of these fields in their everyday lives.
Some of the activities include building and launching water rockets, building and testing various engineered structures, performing chemistry experiments, making musical instruments and modeling sound waves, and exploring the biological and natural resources on the Columbia College campus.
Students work collaboratively, like real scientists and engineers, to solve problems and test their solutions.
Eight teachers were recruited from Tuolumne County schools based on their experience, expertise, and ability to challenge students with engaging activities.
Mad About Science allows teachers to have their students experience subjects and activities not always possible in a traditional classroom setting.
A generous grant from Front
Porch and the Sonora Area Foundation provides funding for Mad About Science. Columbia College donates the classroom space and includes support for the camp throughout the week.
The Tuolumne County Superintendent of School’s Office provides registration, scheduling, and overall management of the camp.
