Summerville Bears lose season opener to Waterford on fourth-quarter TD
The Summerville Bears went into the fourth quarter Tuesday night tied 28-28 with the Waterford Wildcats, who ultimately came out with the win after a touchdown with about nine minutes remaining.
It was the first varsity football game of the 2021 season for Summerville High School, which saw its first scheduled matchup against Galt get cancelled over air quality concerns due to smoke from wildfires.
Tuesday’s game at Waterford High School was also supposed to be played Friday night, but got delayed due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at Summerville that shut down the campus Thursday afternoon through Monday and resulted in all sports games being cancelled or rescheduled.
According to reporting of the game on Maxpreps, a website that tracks high school sports, Summerville’s Braylon Leveroos scored the first touchdown for the Bears on a 6-yard run early in the second quarter.
Leveroos’ touchdown was followed by a two-point conversion to put Summerville up 8-7 over Waterford.
The Wildcats answered with another touchdown, which the Bears responded to with a 40-yard rushing touchdown of their own on the ensuing drive that was followed by another two-point conversion to put Summerville back in the lead 16-14.
Summerville then extended their lead to 22-14 with an interception that was returned for a touchdown, though another attempt at a two-point conversion was unsuccessful just before the end of the first half.
A 60-yard pass by the Bears on the first drive of the third quarter further extended their lead to 28-14, but they were unable to convert a two-point conversion after the touchdown.
Waterford was able to score
two additional touchdowns in the third quarter to tie the game going into the fourth.
Summerville will have a short week to practice before hosting the currently undefeated Hughson Huskies in the Bears’ home opener on Saturday night at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.
