Two deaths, 122 new cases in Tuolumne County over weekend

Tuolumne County had two additional deaths from COVID-19 and 122 new cases over the long holiday weekend Saturday through Tuesday.

The residents who died were identified as a man and a woman, both in their 70s and unvaccinat­ed. No further informatio­n about their deaths was disclosed by the Tuolumne County Public Health Department.

Their deaths brought the county’s total to 96 since the pandemic began, with 23 of those having occurred since Aug. 1, or about 24%.

Only two of the residents who have died were vaccinated.

Six of the county’s 122 new cases over the long holiday weekend were inmates at the Sierra Conservati­on Center state prison outside of Jamestown.

Eighteen of the 116 community cases over the weekend were people who had been fully vaccinated against the deadly disease.

The community cases were identified as eight girls and nine boys under age 12; 15 girls and eight boys between 12 and 17; nine women and 10 men between 18 and 29; seven women and six men in their 30s; 13 women and eight men in their 40s; two women and six men in their 50s; four women and five men in their 60s; three women in their 70s; one woman and one man in their 80s; and one woman in her 90s.

There were 256 active cases and 16 people hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 in the county as of Tuesday evening.

Calaveras County added 52 new cases over the long weekend, though it does not provide the gender, age, or vaccinatio­n status of new cases.

A total of 64 Calaveras County residents have died from the virus since the start of the pandemic, with the most recent death reported late last week.
