The Hilmar Yellowjackets rallied in the fourth quarter at home Friday night to hand the visiting Sonora Wildcats their third loss of the 2021 high school varsity football season.

Calaveras and Summerville also suffered defeat in each of their respective matchups over the weekend.

Sonora came out to a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter before extending it to 14-0 about midway through the second, according to a score tracker on the website Maxpreps.

Hilmar was able to score its first touchdown with roughly three minutes to go in the second quarter and ended the first half trailing the Wildcats 14-7.

The second half was mostly all Hilmar as the Yellowjackets caught up to Sonora early in the third quarter with a passing touchdown to tie the game.

Sonora recovered a fumble by Hilmar after punting but was unable to convert the turnover into points.

The score remained tied 14-14 at the start of the fourth quarter before Hilmar pulled away with back-to-back touchdowns for a 28-14 lead with roughly seven minutes to go in the game.

Following a turnover on downs, the Wildcats forced Hilmar to punt and got the ball back with roughly two minutes left.

Sonora scored a rushing touchdown with under a minute remaining and kicked off to the Yellowjackets, who were able to run out the clock for the win.

The Wildcats’ loss keeps Hilmar undefeated after four games and puts Sonora back 1-3 on the season as it heads to West High School in Tracy on Friday for a non-league matchup against the Wolf Pack (1-2), who will be coming off a 14-12 victory over Mountain House.

Summerville’s home opener Saturday night at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne was spoiled by the Hughson Huskies, who came away with the 8-6 win.

It was played on Saturday as opposed to Friday due to a COVID-19 outbreak at Summerville High School that forced the Bears to move the previous week’s game to Tuesday.

The Bears (0-2) will continue their quest for their first win Friday in Modesto against Big Valley Christian (0-3), which was defeated 42-15 Delhi High School on Friday.

Calaveras High School suffered its third consecutive loss on Friday, this one in Ripon against the Ripon Indians.

Ripon won 34-7 to go up 2-2 on the season, while Calaveras falls to 1-3 as it prepares to host Bradshaw Christian from Sacramento Friday night at Frank Meyer Field in San Andreas.
