`You the unvaccinated'
To the Editor:
I was compelled to respond to a Sept. 4 letter, “We the unvaccinated,” that included an interesting quote from John Trapp: “Unity without verity is no better than conspiracy.”
I was confused by the word verity in the context of what I read, so I looked it up.
“Verity n : the quality or state of being true or real.”
I agree with John Trapp that we must all unite around the truth. The truth is that when a highly contagious, deadly novel virus threatened humanity, our brave health care providers selflessly immersed themselves into their work knowing at the time that there was no clear understanding of its near, or long-term effects, and no prospect of a cure, or vaccine. Using all of the protections at their disposal, they labored to save or comfort the infected. I am forever grateful to them for that.
The truth is that the professionals of epidemiology also selflessly worked, eventually developing a vaccine that has proven to be safe and effective.
The reality is that before a relevant number of people got vaccinated, the virus evolved and created the delta variant.
The truth is by Sept. 4, unvaccinated children surpassed the number of total infected 70-plus in Tuolumne County, the most vaccinated age group.
The reality is that with the delta variant, the unvaccinated are clearly more susceptible to infection, and we still have not had enough time to understand its lifelong repercussions, if you live at all.
The truth is that there is unity in the scientific community around the verity that vaccines are pivotal in mitigating the effects of the virus. Anything else is no better than conspiracy.
