- — Submitted by the Calaveras County Office of Education

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from all over Calaveras County gathered earlier this month for the 41st annual Math Mini Bowl.

There were 120 students in attendance from eight different schools. The event consists of three different math tests, challenging students to flex their math skills. The last time this student event was held in-person was in May 2019.

The event commenced at the Calaveras River Academy/mountain Oaks gymnasium in San Andreas. With the building enthusiasm to be back inperson, each school was announced in true sporting fashion, with music pumping and spotlights highlighting the mathletes as they entered the competition arena.

Participating schools included Albert Michelson Elementary, Avery Middle School, Christian Family Learning Center, Hazel Fischer Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary and Mokelumne Hill Elementary.

Students competed in an individual test first, the Blitz, a test consisting of 50 questions. They had 45 minutes to complete this test. All tests were taken on Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform. The

second test, the Huddle, is a 25-question test where students pair up and complete the questions together in 30 minutes or less. The final test, the Huddle, is a five-member team test with 25 questions requiring students to complete multiple math computations to find the final answer.

Energy levels soared high with the gymnasium full of smiles, perplexed glances and eager chatter. Scores are determined based on accuracy first and followed by completion time.

Incoming Interim Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools Karen Vail

was the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

“I was so happy to see students from all over the county engaging enthusiastically with each other,” Vail said. “They were so excited to be there in person and so were we.”

First place winners for the Blitz were Bridger Stephens, a fifth-grader at Hazel Fischer Elementary, and Jett Williams, a sixthgrader from Avery Middle School. For the fifth grade Huddle, a Jenny Lind Elementary team took first place, and for the sixthgrade Huddle, first place went to a team from San Andreas Elementary. The fifth-grade first place

Bomb team attend Jenny Lind Elementary, and the sixth-grade first place Bomb winners were from Avery Middle School.
