James ‘Jim’ A. Oliver

May 24, 1940 — June 4, 2022

“As our family mourns the loss of our Patriarch, Heaven rejoices as they gain another Angel.”

With great sadness the family of Jim Oliver announces his passing on Saturday, June 4, 2022, having just celebrated his 82nd birthday. Jim was born in his grandmother’s house in Soulsbyville on May 24, 1940, remaining a lifelong resident of Tuolumne County. He spent his early years in Soulsbyville and Tuolumne, being raised by his grandmother, Josephine James. She had a very large extended family, many of whom remain in the county today.

In his 20s, Jim married and moved to Jamestown, where he raised his sons while starting his various well-known businesses. Two prominent endeavors were the Jim Town Frosty and the Jim Town Whistlestop. The Whistlestop was the first minimart/gas station in the county, opening in 1976. Both Businesses remain and are known by many locals and out-oftowners, sitting at the corner of Rawhide Road and Highway 108. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan holding season tickets for years. What was most important to Jim was his relationship with Christ and Sierra Bible Church for well over 20 years.

Jim leaves behind an extensive family who adored him, as well as an enormous network of friends and acquaintances including Melissa Oliver (nee’ Palaferri), whom he married in 1992; his children, Kevin Oliver, Jimmie (Julie) Oliver, Corey (fiancé Amy Emerald) Oliver, Brandn (Brittany) Mcwilliam, and Brian “Bj” (Jamie) Mcwilliam; grandchildren Wyatt, Ramey (Kristen), Hayden, Alli, Brock, Addison and Cadence Oliver, Brittany (Evan) Olsen, Lily, Harper, Kinsey and Gracie Mcwilliam, and Bryce and Bowdie Banks; great-grandchildren Riley Olsen and Fallon and Faye Oliver. His siblings include three brothers, John Harrington, Tom Harrington and Rich Whitestine. Additional family members are sister-in-law Marcella Palaferri (Monty Howard), nieces Jess (Michael) Minton and Mikayla Miller; great-niece August Grinsell and great-nephewSawyer Minton; and former daughter-in-law Cathy Oliver. In addition, Jim had very close friendships with Ricky Canepa and family and Curt Flores and family. The list of friends and family is countless and too lengthy to mention.

Preceding Jim in death were his grandmother, Josephine “Fini” James Oliver, 1967; mother Gladys James Harrington, 1981; father Kenneth “Whitey” Whitestine, 2006; former wife Joan Coffer Oliver, 2016; father-in-law Richard Palaferri, 2005; and mother-in-law :oretta Palaferri, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Sierra Bible Church, with graveside services at 11:30 a.m. at Carter’s Cemetery in Tuolumne.
