Tuolumne County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting that happened Tuesday afternoon near the township of Tuolumne.

One man suffered a single gunshot wound in the incident that occurred in the roadway at Cherokee and Nonies roads, according to Deputy Ashley Boujikian, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Boujikian said the man was taken by an ambulance to Adventist Health Sonora, where was later flown by helicopter to an outside hospital for further treatment. She did not have an update on his condition as of about 4 p.m. Tuesday, though she believed the injury wasn’t life threatening.

Sheriff’s dispatchers received multiple calls about the incident beginning about 1:25 p.m. Tuesday. Boujikian said one caller reported hearing a gunshot and seeing someone running, while another said they were flagged down by a man who was bleeding and asking for help.

Deputies responded to the area and found the man who had been shot. Boujikian said the Sheriff’s Office isn’t releasing his name or any other identifying information at this time.

Boujikian said detectives were actively investigating the incident Tuesday and couldn’t confirm additional details, including the type of gun used, the location on the body where the man was shot, the number of potential suspects, and what led to the shooting.

No arrests had been announced as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, though Boujikian noted that it was believed to be an isolated incident with no additional threat to public safety.

“We do not anticipate any risk to the public with this,” she said. “If that was the concern, we would be broadcasting it to the community.”
