One 49ers’ vote for training camp MVPS: Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk

- By ERIC BRANCH

First, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk made a toetapping, outstretched catch along the left sideline. Then, he had a touchdown reception amid a crowd of defenders in the right corner of the end zone. Finally, he managed to keep his feet inbounds while going high for a grab in the back of the end zone.

And after Aiyuk’s impressive practice performance was over Wednesday, the recipient of those passes from quarterback Trey Lance was the recipient of praise from free safety Jimmie Ward, 31, a team captain and the 49ers’ longest-tenured player.

“I feel like (Aiyuk’s) having the best camp out of everybody on the team, offense and defense,” Ward said.

The best? Ward caught himself. He’d forgotten about a certain Pro Bowl pass rusher.

“OK, besides (Nick) Bosa,” Ward said. “Bosa’s going to be Bosa. But I’m just saying, B.A. is taking his game to another level. It’s crazy. I haven’t won one-on-one rep with him yet. I want to say last year, there were a couple of reps that I won against him. But not this year.”

Aiyuk made his series of catches a day after he twice scuffled in practice with linebacker Fred Warner. Their second scrap came after Warner leveled wide receiver Marcus Johnson with an unnecessarily aggressive hit. Aiyuk, who wasn’t involved in the play, got in Warner’s face and the two players squared off in boxing stances before they were consumed in a dogpile of teammates.

Last year, head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn’t pleased with how Aiyuk reported for training camp. Ward appreciated his feistiness during Tuesday’s practice.

“I love seeing B.A. fight,” Ward said. “I’m just saying, he’s an aggressive guy. But we just need that every day.”

Matthews injured: Tight end Jordan Matthews suffered a torn ACL in practice Monday, a league source said.

Matthews, 30, who was competing for a spot on the 53-man roster, spent most of last season on the practice squad, playing in just one game, after making the transition from wide receiver. Matthews, who had spent parts of the past three seasons with the 49ers, has 274 catches, 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns in his eight-year career.

Charlie Woerner, who ended last season as the team’s No. 2 tight end, is sidelined after undergoing core-muscle surgery in the offseason. A group that includes Ross Dwelley, Tyler Kroft, Tanner Hudson and Troy Fumagalli is likely competing for the No. 3 spot.

This and that: Johnson, a day after taking a big shot from Warner, did not practice. ... Others who did not practice: linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Demetrius Flannigan-fowles and offensive lineman Jaylon Moore. ... Bosa and tight end George Kittle were given rest days.
