Martha Ruth Marcipan passed away on July 16, 2022. She was a resident of Modesto. She was 94.

Martha Ruth, “Ruth,” was born June 25, 1928, at O’connor Hospital in San Jose to Joseph and Jewel (Parr) Morettini. She was a third-generation Californian.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) Marcipan, and nephew, William (Bill) Marcipan. She is survived by her two children, Sara Marcipan and Tim Marcipan; granddaughter, Jillian Marcipan; great-granddaughter, Asia Miller; two sisters, Mary Zanger, of Hollister, and Joann Barnes Kramer, of Ventura; brother-in-law, Bob (June) Marcipan, of Pleasanton; along with numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a student at St Leo’s Grammar School in San Jose. She attended Notre Dame High School. Ruth went on to attend UC Berkeley, graduating in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in science. Ruth was an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

After marrying Jack in 1950, the couple resided in Gilroy, where Jack had been hired as a teacher. Ruth earned a teaching credential and loved teaching kindergarten. The couple moved to Saratoga in 1959 when Jack became principal at Westmont Elementary School in Santa Clara.

Upon retirement, Jack and Ruth moved to Twain Harte, close to Ruth’s beloved Pinecrest Lake, where she, her mother and siblings enjoyed treasured childhood summers from 1930-1943, camping at the lake before World War II rationing precluded further travel.

Residing in Twain Harte for 36 years, Ruth was an active member and volunteer at All Saints Catholic Church as well as Fine Diner’s Club and the Women’s Guild. Ruth made friends easily and enjoyed social activities. She was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Twain Harte Ladies Golf group. After the passing of her husband in 1993, Ruth developed a love of travel. She visited every continent on the globe and continued to travel until she turned 90. In 2018 Ruth moved to Standiford Senior Living in Modesto, where she made many friends and enjoyed chair zumba and bean bag baseball.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at St. Leo’s the Great Catholic Church in San Jose. Interment will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery.
