Sen. Mitch Mcconnell will remain hospitalized after suffering concussion
WASHINGTON — Mitch Mcconnell is expected to remain in a Washington D.C. hospital for a few days as he recovers from a concussion, his office announced Thursday.
The Senate Republican leader tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and was admitted to an area hospital.
The admission of a concussion came about 13 hours after Mcconnell’s office said the Kentuckian reported to a hospital for medical treatment.
“Leader Mcconnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion,” read Thursday’s statement from Mcconnell spokesman David Popp. “He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment. The leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”
At 81-years-old, Mcconnell is the longest-serving U.S. Senate leader in history and longest serving U.S. Senator from Kentucky.
In August 2019, when he was majority leader, Mcconnell fell and fractured his shoulder on the patio of his home in Kentucky, ultimately recovering from the injury.
Earlier Thursday on the Senate floor, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer offered his thoughts on Mcconnell, who he called “my good friend.”
“This morning I offer a prayer of strength and healing for the leader and his family,” Schumer said. “I called the leader this morning and spoke briefly with his staff to extend my prayers and well wishes. My thoughts are also with Leader Mcconnell’s family and his team. I join every single one of my colleagues in wishing Leader Mcconnell a speedy and full recovery.”
