Fall beers: Into the woods

When the first cool days of fall arrive, many beer drinkers start reaching for barrel-aged porters, imperial stouts, and autumnal ales, said Fritz Hahn in The Washington Post. “Here are a few you’d be wise to look for.”

($13 for 12 oz). Aged in oak tanks with vanilla beans, this legendary stout has “notes of fudge, cocoa, and raspberrie­s,” plus “noticeable heat” from its high alcohol content.

($15 for 500 ml). Goose Island’s celebrated barrelaged stout arrives on November’s Black Friday this year and will include a variant that tastes like bananas Foster.

($26 for 750 ml). The fancy corked-and-caged bottles make clear that this sour ale, aged in apple-flavored whiskey barrels, is something special.
