Wave of violence: Racial justice protests continued here and across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death as the city coped with an unprecedented surge in gun violence. On a single day last week, 10 people were wounded in four separate incidents, including one at a park where youth football players were practicing. “I thought somebody was going to die,” said David Trueblood, a coach who hurled his body atop terrified kids. “Nothing like this has ever happened. It’s hard to understand.” Since Memorial Day, 118 people have been wounded and eight killed, while the 190 shootings in the city so far this year come to 47 percent more than last year. Meanwhile, the City Council voted last week to seek voters’ permission in November to scrap the police department and replace it with a new agency focused on prevention and safety. It’s unclear how many police officers it would have or how many current officers would be rehired.
