Aurora, Colo.
New inquiry: Colorado Gov. Jared Polis ordered state prosecutors to reopen the investigation into the death of an unarmed black man at the hands of police last year. Elijah McClain, 23, was walking home from a convenience store in Aurora when officers grabbed him, restrained him in a chokehold, and threatened to sic their dog on him. He had committed no crime, although a motorist had phoned cops after spotting McClain wearing a ski mask, calling him “sketchy.” McClain’s family said he often wore the mask because his anemia made him feel cold. A medic injected him with ketamine to calm him as he begged for his life and vomited several times. Three days later, he died. The officers faced no charges. Meanwhile, Aurora’s police department opened an internal investigation into photos that reportedly show several cops re-enacting the chokehold that killed McClain.
