Police brutality: Video of Canadian police beating up an unarmed First Nations chief has prompted a national conversation about racism in law enforcement. Allan Adam was charged with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest in March, after he was stopped in connection with an expired license plate. But dashcam footage released last month shows police tackling the Dene leader for no apparent reason, punching him as he lay on the ground, then placing him in a chokehold. Adam is a well-known campaigner for environmental justice in Canada and video of his ordeal drew international condemnation. Police last week dropped charges against Adam. “Far too many black Canadians and indigenous people do not feel safe around the police,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “It’s unacceptable.”
