Charity of the week
Started by lawyer
Bryan Stevenson in 1989, the Equal
Justice Initiative
(eji.org) is devoted to freeing the innocent, reforming the criminal justice system, and raising awareness of racial inequities. EJI provides legal assistance to inmates on death row who have been wrongfully convicted, winning powerful exonerations, some of which are described in Stevenson’s best-selling book Just Mercy. In addition, EJI represents children who have been put into adult prisons; in 2012, EJI won a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court striking down life sentences without parole for juveniles. In 2018, EJI opened the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Ala., on a site next to an infamous slave market, to educate the public on the history of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation in America.
