Covid election: At least three of the 18 candidates running in next week’s Peruvian presidential election have contracted Covid-19. One of the infected is George Forsyth, a former goalkeeper with the national soccer team who later served as a mayor of a Lima district; the 38-year-old had led the race with a tough-on-corruption message, but was recently overtaken by left-leaning populist Yonhy Lescano. The pandemic has ravaged the Peruvian economy and upended the political landscape, with voters turning against establishment parties after it was revealed that hundreds of top politicians and business leaders jumped the queue to get Covid vaccines early. Nearly a third of Peruvians say they support none of the candidates and plan to cast blank ballots.
