Olympic crime: Brazil’s former top Olympic official has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing sports officials to secure the 2016 Summer Games for Rio de Janeiro. Carlos Arthur Nuzman, head of Brazil’s Olympic committee for 22 years, was found guilty of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion as the mastermind of a scheme to pay $2 million to buy votes for Rio’s bid. When he was arrested in 2017, police found $155,000 in his home and a key to a Swiss vault housing 16 gold bars. Former Rio Gov. Sérgio Cabral, who gave evidence against Nuzman and is serving a life sentence for corruption in other matters, was also convicted, as was businessman Arthur Soares, who financed the bribes. It’s unlikely that Nuzman, 79, will spend any time behind bars, because he can remain free while appealing and his age will likely qualify him for clemency.
