Train attack: More than 165 people are still missing after an armed gang attacked a train with explosives last week and opened fire on passengers, killing at least eight. Nigeria’s state rail company isn’t sure how many of the missing were kidnapped for ransom; some may have simply fled in the chaos. The gunmen blew up a section of track between the capital, Abuja, and the northern city of Kaduna and forced panicked passengers from train cars at gunpoint. Kidnapping is a booming business for bandits in Nigeria, and gangs have attacked homes and cars and even the airport in Kaduna many times over the past few months. This latest incident has eroded confidence in President Muhammadu Buhari. Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper reported that Buhari’s government had advance intelligence of a plot against the trains but did little to stop it.
