Rio de Janeiro
Deadly police raid: At least 19 people were killed last week when heavily armed military police raided one of Rio de Janeiro’s most violent favelas, looking for members of a criminal gang suspected of bank robberies. Some 400 officers fanned out across the Complexo do Alemão for an entire day, trapping thousands of people in their homes as bullets sprayed from helicopters hovering above. Outraged residents protested after the raid, carrying bloody bodies on sheets and shouting “justice, peace.” Brazilian police kill six times more civilians than American police even though Brazil has two-thirds the population of the U.S. Earlier this year, police killed 23 people in a raid on a different Rio favela.
