Alcatraz 2.0: To stop gang leaders from running their operations from behind bars, Honduras plans to send 2,000 prisoners to a new island penal colony. Great Swan Island, located 155 miles off Honduras’ coast, lies well beyond cellphone range. “It’s the farthest away they can possibly be,” said José Jorge Fortín, head of Honduras’ military. “The idea is that they lose contact with everything, contact with all of society... and they can really pay for their crimes.” President Xiomara Castro has handed the military control of Honduras’ lawless prisons in the wake of last month’s brawl at a women’s prison. That fight between rival gangs MS-13 and Barrio 18 left 46 people dead.
