It must be true... I read it in the tabloids

■ A Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit had to turn back 450 miles into its journey after a shower of maggots fell from an overhead bin onto a female passenger. “She was freaking out,” said Philip Schotte, who was seated near the unlucky flier. “She was just trying to kind of fight off these maggots.” Flight attendants soon found the source of the grubs: a rotting fish wrapped in newspaper that another passenger had stashed in the compartment. After landing back at Amsterdam, the Delta plane was removed from service for cleaning.

■ A Danish man stuffed 68 matchsticks up his nose to set a world record. “Surprisingly it didn’t really hurt,” said Peter von Tangen Buskov, 39, adding that he was aided by “fairly large nostrils and quite stretchy skin.” Buskov could have clinched the Guinness world record with a mere 45 matches, but found he had space for another 23. He doesn’t think he can best his current record but hasn’t ruled out trying. “An increase in capacity would require some training,” said Buskov, “or perhaps my nose will grow as I get older.”

■ The head of culture for the Colombian city of Medellin was forced to resign after publicly admitting he had “no idea” how to do his job and had no relevant qualifications. During a talk at the University of Antioquia, Manuel Córdoba said, “I don’t know what a registry is or what a library is” and that he’d only accepted the job as culture boss because he was “fascinated” with the idea of jumping into the unknown. Announcing his resignation, Córdoba apologized for not “living up to the enormous responsibility” the city had placed on him.
