International Observe the Moon Night

On Oct. 8, Sugar Creek Astronomical Society will be hosting International Observe the Moon Night at Hobbs State Park. Everyone on Earth is invited to join the celebration by attending an InOMN event and uniting on one day each year to look at and learn about the Moon together.

“We will host a public lecture by Caitlin Ahrens of the University of Arkansas on current science on the Moon at 6:30 p.m. in the Hobbs classroom,” said Katherine Auld, president of the Sugar Creek group.

“This will be followed at 7:30 by a public star party. We will have several telescopes on site viewing the moon. In addition, we encourage anyone who has a telescope and would like to practice or need assistance setting it up to bring it along. We have plenty of space, and the Moon makes a wonderful viewing target for beginners.”

Auld requests that participants use only running lights entering and leaving the parking lot, respecting the viewing and night vision of those at telescopes. What to bring: • Flashlight (covered with a red cloth or red balloon)

• Binoculars and/or telescope you have) • Folding chair. This free event fun as well as a great Boy or Girl Scout experience.

Mother Nature at Hobbs State Park

Mother Nature herself has become a frequent visitor to Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area. She visits the park every second Saturday of the month to read nature stories to her little followers.

The next reading, “Three Cheers for Trees,” begins at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 8.

Storytime will be followed by hands-on nature-craft activities. Children of all ages are welcome; however, most stories target children 3-6 years of age.

Also join Mother Nature as she presents “Living Forest” from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

Animals have lot to tell us. Listen to the stories of a barred owl, deer, spider, bat, blue jays, skunk, a raccoon, an eagle, squirrel and more, personified by Costumed Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists. These educational and meaningful messages will be uncomplicated and easy for young children to understand. Teenagers and adults will learn, too.

Living Forest is for families with members of all ages. Come enjoy the face painting, crafts and free s’mores. Strollers and wagons are welcome as you meander along a wide, paved, barrier-free path. If you want to be like Mother Nature’s animal friends, come in costume.

Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area visitor center is located on Arkansas Highway 12 just east of the War Eagle Road intersection. These events are free. For more information, call 479-7895000.
