R. Stanley Howard
R. Stanley Howard, 91, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016. He was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Tempe, Ariz., to R. Stanley Howard Sr. and Zella Cowan.
He spent his early years on the family dairy farm and earned his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona.
In 1951, newlyweds, he and Jane made their home in Albuquerque. He built his career at Sandia National Laboratory and, for over 38 years, he worked in weapons development and nuclear safeguards. He earned the designation Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. In his retirement years, he was a science adviser for several of the public schools in Albuquerque. He was a charter member and early leader of Christ United Methodist Church. He loved square dancing and was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Jane Howard; and daughter, Ellen Howard.
He is survived his daughter, Susan Nuttall and husband John of Bella Vista; grandsons, Reid Nuttall and Nathan Hinchberger; and three great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Rhiannon and Sean Hinchberger of Bellvue, Wash.
A memorial service for Stan and Jane Howard will be held in Albuquerque Friday, Nov. 4.
