Wanda L. Wiemer, 87, of Burlington, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at her home.

Wanda Lou Johnson was born to Alfred and Marjorie Monteith Johnson on May 11, 1929, in Exline, IA. She first married Dale P. Cornick in 1949 and after his death married David L. Wiemer of Rockford, IL.

She moved to Burlington, IA when she was 12 years old and graduated from Burlington High School in 1946.

She worked for Northweste­rn Bell Telephone Company, then Schramm’s Department Store and later at Chubb and Son Insurance in Los Angeles. Later, she returned to Burlington and worked as Clerk/Typist at the IAAP.

She married Dale Cornick in 1949 and together they had four children: one boy and three girls. Later, she became active in volunteer work including being on the Board of Directors of the YWCA, as a hospital volunteer and later was on the Board of Directors of the local Kings Daughter’s Home. After 17 years as a mother and homemaker, she went back to the working world, first taking refresher courses at Drake University and Southeaste­rn Community College. She then obtained her insurance and real estate licenses and was active in those fields. She later became secretary to the court administra­tor of the 8th Judicial District of Iowa. Her husband of 35 years died of cancer in 1984. After being widowed, her high school classmate contacted her. David Wiemer and Wanda were married in North Palm Beach, Fla, on Feb. 26, 1986. She then moved from Burlington to Rockford, Ill., and assumed the position of Administra­tive Assistant to the Court Administra­tor. In that position, she helped to bring mandatory arbitratio­n into the state system. After retiring in 1990, she and her husband moved to Bella Vista, Ark., where they lived for 12 years. Wanda loved her game of golf and she is proud of her one hole-inone at Flint Hills. She also played as much bridge as possible. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, NH Chapter of PEO, What So Ever Circle of King’s Daughters, Burlington Golf Club, Burlington Women’s Club and other organizati­ons.

Survivors include her husband, David L Wiemer; her four children, Mark (Karla) Cornick and Lynn (Tom) Sawyer both of Burlington, Diane (David) Gabeline of Danville, and Kathryn (Jim) O’Donnell of Seattle, WA; step-children, David (Kathy) Wiemer of Minnetonka, MN, Douglas (Kathy) Wiemer of Boulder, CO, Dan (Kim) Wiemer of Red Wing, MN, Diana Wiemer of Durand, IL; ten grandchild­ren, Jodi Norton, Zachary Cornick, Nicholas Cornick, Shane Sawyer, Christa Reid, Brianna McCord, Adam Gabeline, Alex Menke, Andrew Wasson, and Daniel Wasson; 16 great-grandchild­ren; three step-grandchild­ren, Emily, Julia, and Paige Wiemer; and two sisters, Sandra Gustafson of Athens, GA and Marjorie Kay (Al) Limback of North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale Cornick; and one brother, Gunnar Johnson.

Visitation was held from noon until 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Wiemer was 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Reverend Susanne E. Smith officiated. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been establishe­d for Messiah Lutheran Church.

Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home is in care of the arrangemen­ts.
