Check out those mussels
Have many of us really taken the time to understand how mussels fit into the big picture? America’s mussels, or clams, are a group of animals so inconspicuous they are often mistaken for rocks. Laying on the bottom of lakes, rivers and creeks, they rarely move and eat by filtering water for microscopic food particles. Mussels play a key role in aquatic environments, and are considered to be “ecosystem engineers” because they modify aquatic habitat making it more suitable for themselves and other organisms.
Freshwater mussels are quite significant. According to Steve Dunlap, Northwest Regional Game and Fish Commission education coordinator, “The freshwater mussel has made a significant impact on the cultural history of Arkansas. However, these animals have a very unique natural history and some unbelievable biology. In this program you’ll check out my mussels and learn more about these unique animals. Plus, we’ll look at the mussel’s impact as food, jewelry, the historic button industry and pearls.”
Join Steve Dunlap and check out his mussels. This event takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Hobbs State Park, located on Arkansas Highway 12 just east of the Highway 12/War Eagle Road intersection.

Eagle Watch Cruises
According to park interpreter Rebekah Penny, “We have always been lucky seeing eagles on our tours — some mature, some immature, and we always see other beautiful wildlife as well. It could be migrating osprey, great blue herons, king fishers, deer or red-tailed hawks. No one will ever be disappointed on our eagle tours.” Penny added, “We can only take 20 guests at a time, so it’s important that folks call the park in a timely manner to ensure that their names get on the boarding lists.”
Tours will take place on Feb. 18, 19, 25 and 26.
Tickets must be purchased in advance. Adults are $10 plus tax and children 6-12 are $5 plus tax. Tours depart Rocky Branch Marina promptly at 3 p.m.
