Problem-solving skill of the month at Duffy

Students honor second-grader after his battle with cancer.

The Glenn Duffy Elementary School PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month, PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education.

The word for this month is “problem-solving.” This means to focus on the problem as it is, gather information, then use knowledge to solve the problem. Coach Melissa Pittman introduced the problem-solving poster that she made from what the kids discussed last week during PE classes. Students used words like “just keep swimming,” “ask,” “help” and “talk.”

Students also welcomed returning second-grader Nate Croasdell. His teacher, Jennifer Davis, and high school basketball coach Matt Busch led the celebration. Last May, Nate was diagnosed with Stage 3 malignant kidney cancer (Wilms tumor). His right kidney was removed, and he received two weeks of radiation. He also received 28 chemo treatments since his diagnosis. He has been working hard from home but was unable to attend school after the first couple weeks. Teachers were happy to announce that he is back and cancer-free! The basketball team led a chant, “Nate won!”
