Health Resource Center closes

■ The Health Fair and Health Expo will be taken over by Village House.

- From Staff Reports

The Schmieding Center and Bella Vista Health Resource Center in The Highlands Crossing building closed April 28.

The center, which opened in 2004, served the elder population and caregivers in the city. The Bella Vista office was an outreach location of the Schmieding Center in Springdale. Earlier this year, UAMS/Schmieding Springdale increased the outreach expectations beyond Benton County.

The popular Health Fair and Health Expo have been sponsored by the Bella Vista Resource Advisory Council,

The Weekly Vista and The Bella Vista POA/Riordan Hall. With the closing of the Schmieding Center, BVRAC is also closing. The Health Fair and Health Expo will continue, coordinated by Village House. The Health Fair will be held Sept. 14 at Riordan Hall.

BVRAC’s remaining funds were donated to Village House, Bella Vista Library, Bella Vista Museum and Courtesy Van.

Village House will be coordinating the fairs and will also house books and other information on dementia from the Health Resource Center’s Library. The Adult Day Program is located in the lower level of Highlands Crossing Center, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd., Suite 206 and is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

The Bella Vista Library took the newer books and the plaque commemorating the donation of $50,000, given by Jane Stegman in the name of her brother, Bill Billington, and his wife, Rose Billington. Stegman was introduced to the Schmieding Center in Springdale when she wanted to move her brother, who had Alzheimer’s disease, to the area. The donation helped start the Bella Vista Health Resource Center and Library. The plaque will hang near the health resource books and materials in the Bella Vista Library.

The Bella Vista Museum took the scrapbooks for safe keeping of our history. The books were put together by the Health Resource Center volunteers showcasing the center’s many activities, staff and volunteers.

The Courtesy Van runs on donations and is also in need of volunteer drivers.

“The staff and members of the BVRAC Board thank all who have supported the center’s mission over the years, especially our wonderful volunteer,” wrote Rescource Center staff members Ellen Creakbaum and Nancy Galbraith. “Special thanks to Sherri White and Margaret Christensen for your past leadership. It is with sadness that we extinguish the torch.”
