Master Naturalists accepting applications

Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists are now accepting applications for new members’ annual training.

Classes start Jan. 20 for the Benton County class, Jan. 24 for the new Carroll County class, and Jan. 27 for the Washington/Madison County class. Benton and Washington county classes mostly meet on alternating Saturdays. Carroll county classes will meet on Wednesdays with field time to be determined. The cost for the class is $135 for training and materials, plus $30 annual dues. The cost is $80 for a second household member if materials are shared, plus annual dues.

Any adult who is curious and enjoys learning about the natural world, sharing that knowledge with others, and supporting conservation can be an Arkansas Master Naturalist.

Over 60 hours of instruction are offered on such things as native and invasive species, local wildlife, watersheds, birds, bugs, snakes and frogs, geology, prairies and other ecological topics specific to the Ozarks. Most classes combine lectures with lab or field work. Some classes introduce new members to special interest groups such as those interested in trails, birds, wildlife habitat and native plants. Forty hours of instruction with 40 hours of volunteer service will qualify members as Certified Master Naturalists.
