Recreation Department preparing for summer
When the swimming pool opens at Metfield this year, barefoot members will have a more comfortable experience thanks to a new deck around both pools. The pool complex is one of several large recreation projects currently underway in Bella Vista.
Recreation Director Joan Glubczynski said the outside work at Metfield is complete except for painting the exterior of the bathhouse building. Both pools were replastered and retiled, but the deck may be the more noticeable change. The new finish is called “Kool Deck” and was developed to make the surface both cooler and less slippery. The textured surface will be non-skid.
Water is already in the pool and should be warming up as opening day approaches.
Inside the bathhouse, new counters and sinks are being installed in what Glubczynski calls a “light renovation.”
The pool should be ready to open as scheduled on Memorial Day weekend.
The playground at Metfield Park will get it’s makeover in early June, she said. Most of the playground equipment, with the exception of some of the swings, will be removed and replaced with brand new equipment which will meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
At the Riordan complex, two tennis courts are being rebuilt. The courts, numbers 5 and 6, are very popular, Glubczynski said. She believes they were built in the 1980’s with an expected lifespan of 25 to 30 years. they are the lowest courts in the complex and have been damaged by rain.
The renovation consists of a new “post tensioned” concrete pad which is recommended for the type of terrain in Bella Vista, she said. There will also be a new top surface with modern colors.
New landscaping and fencing will help direct water away from the court in the future.
“We would love to do two courts a year but like everything it always comes down to budget,” Glubczynski said about the remaining courts.
Meanwhile, new playground equipment — described as a mini-zip line — will be going in at Lake Avalon, outside the fenced in beach area, Glubczynski said. It should be ready when the beach opens on May 26, she said. A sand volleyball court is also getting finishing touches.
