Inter Miami to play 2 matches in Saudi Arabia. Messi vs. Ronaldo will happen Feb. 1 Ohtani’s Dodgers contract has $680 million deferred, lowering tax value to $46 million annually

-

Shohei Ohtani will receive just $20 million of his $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the next 10 years, with $680 million payable from 2034-43.

Ohtani’s deal, agreed to Saturday, calls for annual salaries of $70 million, according to details obtained by The Associated Press. Of each year’s salary, $68 million is deferred with no interest, payable in equal installments each July 1 from 2034-43.

For purposes of the luxury tax, the contract is valued as a yearly addition to the Dodgers’ payroll of about $46 million.

Ohtani’s contract, combined with those of Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, raises the Dodgers’ total of deferred money owed to the three to $857 million from 2033-44.

Betts has a $365 million deal covering 2021-32 that includes $115 million in deferred salaries payable from 2033-44 and has the final $5 million of his signing bonus payable from 2033-35.

Freeman has a $162 million, sixyear deal for 2022-27 that includes $57 million in deferred money payable from 2028-40.

Los Angeles’ high points of the deferred payments are 2038 and ‘39, when the trio will be owed $83 million, and 2040, when they will be due $84 million.

By receiving the vast majority of the money when he presumably will not be living in the United States, Ohtani also figures to have a tax benefit. California’s top tax rate for residents is 13.3%.

Former Boise State QB Taylen Green transferring to Arkansas; Penn State lands Division II OT Herron

Former Boise State quarterback Taylen Green announced Monday he is transferring to Arkansas, Penn State received a commitment from transferring offensive tackle Alan Herron from Division II Shorter and Washington reserve quarterback Dylan Morris entered the portal ahead of the team’s playoff game.

In other transfer news, Arizona State landed former Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt through the portal and Missouri added Georgia State running back Marcus Carroll, who ran for 1,350 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

Green began and finished the season as the starter at Boise State, ultimately helping lead the Broncos to the Mountain West championship. He passed for 1,752 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions and ran for 436 yards and nine scores.

The 6-foot-6, 221-pound third-year player posted on social media he was committed to Arkansas. Green’s arrival seems to signal KJ Jefferson’s departure from Arkansas. The fifthyear quarterback has another year of eligibility left but he has neither entered the transfer portal or declared for the NFL draft.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will meet in Saudi Arabia after all.

Inter Miami confirmed Monday that it will take part in the Riyadh Season Cup — something that was announced by Saudi officials on Nov. 21. Inter Miami said the reports at that time were inaccurate.

Inter Miami will play Al-hilal on Jan. 29 and Al Nassr — Ronaldo’s team — on Feb. 1. Those two clubs lead the Saudi Pro League and Ronaldo is that league’s leading scorer.

“These matches will offer important tests for our team, which will benefit us as we approach the new season,” Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson said. “We’re excited for our group to get the chance to go up against teams with as much quality as Al-hilal and Al Nassr.”

Messi and Ronaldo have faced off 35 times between matches for club and country, Inter Miami said, with Messi’s teams winning 16, Ronaldo’s teams winning 10 and the sides settling for a draw on the other nine occasions. Messi has 21 goals and 12 assists in those matches; Ronaldo has 20 goals and one assist.
