Jaeger leapfrogs Detry for lead at Farmers

Stephan Jaeger sank a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 at Torrey Pines South for a one-shot lead in the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open on Friday, moments after Thomas Detry’s third shot landed well past the hole and spun back into the pond fronting the green, leading to a double bogey that cost him the lead.

It was a tough day of high scores on the blufftop municipal gem high above the Pacific Ocean. Detry took biggest gut punch when he went from a one-shot lead on the 18th tee to dropping two shots off the pace.

Jaeger, a German who lives in Tennessee, had a 1-over 73 and was at 11-under 205 through 54 holes. Matthieu Pavon (72) of France and Nicolai Hojgaard (73) of Denmark were at 10-under while Detry, of Belgium, was 9 under after his 73.

There very well could be a first-time winner on the PGA Tour after the final round. Jaeger has never won on tour, and neither has any of the eight players within three shots of him.

Nelly Korda up by 2 at LPGA Drive On

Nelly Korda birdied three of her final four holes on Friday to shoot a 4-under 67 and take a two-shot lead midway through the LPGA Drive On Championship.

Seeking her first LPGA Tour victory since 2022, the former world No. 1 was at 10-under 132 through 36 holes at Bradenton Country Club, a Donald Ross-designed course in her hometown that she hasn’t played all that often.

Korda got a big roar when she closed her round by hitting a 6-iron to about 6 feet for birdie on the par-3 ninth hole.

So Mi Lee had the second-best round of the day, a 65. She was two shots back. Lydia Ko, who won last week’s season opener and shared the first-round lead with Korda, was three shots behind after a 70, alongside Xiyu Lin (66) and Ayaka Furue (67).

Korda started on the back nine and bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole to fall to 1 under for the day. She followed with birdies on the par-5 sixth and eighth.
