ONE MAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING SHOOTING
Woman taken to hospital, extent of injuries not yet released
A man has been taken into custody in connection with a Longmont shooting and a subsequent police chase through northern Boulder County.
Longmont Public Safety spokesperson Robin Ericson said that at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Goshawk Drive after a woman was shot in the driveway of a home.
The woman was taken to Longmont United Hospital, and her medical status has not been released. Ericson said the victim and the suspected shooter knew each other.
According to Ericson, the suspected shooter fled the scene in a white Subaru.
The suspect then drove out of Longmont on Colo. 66 toward Lyons, according to police radio traffic. The driver briefly stopped on U.S. 36 just west of Lyons before going back eastbound through Lyons.
Longmont police said law enforcement used tire spikes on the vehicle, which then turned southbound on U.S. 36.
At that point, law enforcement officials on scene said over police radio traffic that it appeared several gunshots were fired out the window of the vehicle, which was having trouble maintaining its lane due to its shredded tires.
The driver then went eastbound on Hygiene Road, where he was stopped and taken into custody with the help of a K-9.
According to Ericson, the suspect was bitten by the K-9 and then was taken to the hospital for a medical clearance. Later, the suspect will be taken to the Boulder County Jail. No charges have been announced at this time.
Ericson said police are investigating whether the driver fired shots out of his window.
Longmont police are not aware of any other bystanders or officers who were injured during the police chase.
Robin Sterne, who lives near the shooting site on Goshawk Drive, said she was sitting inside her house with her husband when they both heard a loud popping noise:
“Just as we reached our front door, we heard it a second time. The whole time I heard a buzzing noise, like a car door was being left open,” said Sterne.
“As we got to the end of our walkway, we could see people in the driveway,
and there was a young boy screaming ‘call 911, call 911.’”
Sterne said the boy appeared to be around 10 years old. Although she didn’t see a gun or a car, Sterne said another neighbor said that a
man drove off in a white vehicle shortly after the gunshots were heard.
“Then they got the victim out of the car,” Sterne said. “I couldn’t really see, there were too many people clustered around,
but several men from the neighborhood lifted her out of the car and put her down in the driveway to attend to her while they waited for medical personnel to show up.”
