Brothers look to transform sports social media

- By Jarreau Freeman

Brothers have been teaming up for centuries, doing everything from creating airplanes to making blockbuster films. Glenside residents and brothers 18-year-old Jerrett and 22-year-old Jamaal Holloway are another dynamic duo who are pairing up to make their mark in social media.

The Holloways are Cheltenham High alumni and are both pursuing bachelors in the business field. So it’s no surprise that these brothers joined forces to build TooAthletic.com, a video sharing site they launched in April 2011 with a single concept in mind — sports.

“We wanted to create TooAthletic.com because we saw how sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have become so popular,” Jerrett said during a recent interview. “We wanted to create something that might become as big as them … We both agreed on sports [as the focus for the site].” Jerrett described the site as a “sports-themed” YouTube site. “Visitors can view sports videos or send videos to us, which takes 24 hours to upload,” Jerrett said. “We are working on creating an automatic upload so that guests can upload their clips directly to the site. We are still working on the site to make it better and better each day.”

Visitors can watch video clips of soccer, baseball, basketball and football games that feature professional, college and high school athletes. Jerrett said that in the future they want to feature sports like track and field, lacrosse and hockey on the site.

In addition to watching sports clips, visitors can get the latest updates in sports news by clicking on the headlines bar that is featured on the page or go shopping at the TooAthletic store, where they sell T-shirts they have designed.

“After we decided to build a website with our main focus being sports, we needed a name that was short but catchy and was available,” Jamaal said. “TooAthletic.com got right to the point of what we are trying to broadcast to the world … athletes with the ‘Too’in front emphasize that we want the best.”

And the best is what the Holloway brothers are working to provide to their fans. Jerrett focuses on website design and Jamaal heads the financial and public relations side of things. Jamaal said that they work well together, because they both want to see the site succeed.

“Jerrett is easy to work with,” Jamaal said. “We know our roles for the site and we know how to collaborate to make it better. I can tell him if I don’t like something on the site and he won’t be upset … He has amazing ideas that he incorporates into the website. He is also highly motivated for this website to succeed and very intelligent, and of course he is my younger brother, gotta love him.”

Jamaal said he hopes TooAthletic becomes a household name like ESPN and Nike.

“We already get a lot of good feedback and there are many people who actually use our site,” he said.

So, what can TooAthletic.com fans anticipate from these entrepreneurs?

Jamaal said they are going to start conducting interviews with student athletes, as well as professionals.

“We already have a few interviews set up, including one with a Super Bowl champ from the area,” he said.

Jerrett said he’s also working on another project he hopes to have up and running next year.

“It’s going to be like a type of social network that will connect athletics everywhere,” he said. “I wrote up the blueprint for it. When it’s finished I have no doubt it will change the way sports are viewed.”

Ultimately, Jerrett said that he wants student athletes to use the site as a way to upload their highlight footage and get exposure, and more importantly, he wants the site to get people excited about sports.

“We want to change the way people view sports and want them to get active in a sport, whether they watch a sport, play a sport or [get inspired] to join a team,” he said.
