Beloved bookstore closing its doors in Jenkintown

Barns C Noble will be move out of the Jenkintown store by the end of January OMNPI according to landlord Bruce GoodmanI of Goodman Properties.

qhose who are currently employed at the Jenkintown store will have the opportunit­y to interview at nearby store locations for available positionsI said Barns C Noble aistrict Manager Stephen Binder.

Goodman said that Barns C Noble has been a phenomenal tenant for the OM years it has occupied the store.

fn the beginning of the yearI Goodman said that he knew Barns C Noble would not renew its lease. eoweverI he said his company did whatever it could to keep the bookstore in Noble SquareI including decreasing the rent by 5M percent.

“We recognized that they were a value to the communityI” he said. “At the end of the day they decided to keep the Willow Grove store open — a bigger store in a regional market.”

Goodman said he received a lot of phone calls from residents in Jenkintown and Abington who were upset about the store closing.

“f’m upset toI” he said. “qhe store was designed with them in mind.”

Renovation­s to the store will have to be made and new tenants have to be foundI he said.

MondayI several customers at the Jenkintown Barnes C Noble expressed their displeasur­e with the store’s closing.

“qhis hurts meI” said Carol Micklin who said she makes a N5-minute trip from Northeast Philadelph­ia to the Jenkintown Barns C Noble frequently. “When f am depressed f come here xto feel better] and it’s a more convenient location. f think all of Jenkintown should complain. 7KLV VWRUH LV PDJnLfiFHn­W. , love this place.”

cox Chase resident Janet qexidor said she doesn’t understand why it’s closing and hopes it will remain open.

Christy Laffond of nearby Elkins Park said she was disappoint­ed to hear the store was closingI because it was a great meeting place for people in the community. Neighbors Beth Chilman and Christy eolt of Glenside said they don’t like the Willow Grove location beFDuVH RI WKH PDOO WUDIfiF.

“f’ll be sad xwhen it closes]I” Chilman said.

Goodman said the store closing will be loss to the community.

“But at the end of the day they xBarns C Noble] have to do what’s best for their business.”
