Sidney Arden of Abington and Yardley

Sidney Arden, M.D., a long-time resident of Abington and Yardley, passed away at age 95 on July 8, 2018 in Aventura, Florida after suffering a stroke. Born on October 30, 1922 in Philadelph­ia, Sidney attended Central High School and received a bachelors degree from the Philadelph­ia College of Pharmacy and a masters degrees in chemistry from Temple University. During World War II, Sidney served in a mobile hospital unit in General Patton’s 3rd Army, whose mission included the liberation and care for prisoners at the Mauthausen-Gusen concentrat­ion camp. After the war, he attended Jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1958. After settling with his family in Abington, Sidney completed a residency in Pathology at the VA Hospital of Philadelph­ia and, after moving to Yardley, served as the Chief Pathologis­t and Director of Laboratori­es at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital in Northeast Philadelph­ia until he retired in 1986. Dr. Arden also taught pathology for many years at the Philadelph­ia College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was fondly remembered by generation­s of foot doctors. As a member of Old York Road Temple - Beth Am in Abington, Dr. Arden served as a director of adult education. After retiring to Aventura, Florida, Dr. Arden pursued his passion for opera and he was the Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of South Florida. Sidney was the loving husband of the late Elise Arden (nee Grossman), and he is survived by his son Glenn S. Arden and daughter-in-law Julia Arden, of Rydal, Pennsylvan­ia and New York, New York; his son Robert B. Arden, of Plantation, Florida; his brothers, Jules Abramson of West Orange, New Jersey and Gilbert B. Abramson of Wynnewood, Pennsylvan­ia; and his granddaugh­ters, Sarah Arden and Olivia Arden, both of New York City. A private memorial service will be held. Donations in Dr. Arden’s name may be made to the Jewish War Veterans of America.
