League of Women Voters to host Vallejo Mayoral Candidate Forum

- By Katy St. Clair kstclair@timesheraldonline.com

The League of Women Voters Solano County is hosting a Vallejo mayoral candidate forum on Saturday, and constituents are encouraged to tune in online to view the event.

The non-partisan campaign forum will be streamed live on the LWVSC YouTube channel. The proceedings will be recorded so that anyone can also catch it after it occurs, according to Communications Chair Sandy Coury.

T he event, co- sponsored by the Oakland/Bay Area chapter of the National 100 Black Women, will feature mayoral candidates Hakeem Brown, M. Avonelle Hanley-Mills, John B. Kenney, Robert McConnell, and Cornisha Williams-Bailey. The event will be moderated by Alice Wilson Fried, a member of the WLV Board in Vacaville and former President of the LWV in Alameda.

“Our rules require that our moderator is not a constituent,” said Coury, adding that the League will never endorse a candidate or a party. “We really want this to be ‘ just the facts.’”

Community members tuning in live for the event will be able to participate in the user chat, and if time permits, they will be

able to ask questions, said Coury. The moderator will present each candidate with the same seven or eight questions, all quelled from community polling. Candidates will also be allowed to present two-minute opening and closing statements.

Saturday’s event will take place on Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon on YouTube (search LWV Solano County to find its channel).

LW VSC is also hosting two other upcoming events in the area on their YouTube channel. A Benicia mayoral candidate forum takes place on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m., and a Vallejo City Council candidate forum will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.
